Manny Pacquiao, a boxing superstar and elected official in the Philippines, has made more controversial statements about same-sex marriage.

Manny Pacquiao doesn’t only have his upcoming retirement bout against Timothy Bradley coming up, he is also running for a Senate seat in the Philippines. The boxing superstar made headlines once again, but this time, for statements made outside the ring.

video has been making the rounds in the Philippines, showing Pacquiao addressing the media and voicing out his controversial stance against same-sex marriage.

“It’s common sense,” the current Sarangani province congressman said in Filipino. “Do you see any animals that go male to male, or female to female?”

“So the animals are even better (than humans),” Pacquiao said with a chuckle. “Because they know how to distinguish from male to male or female to female. Right?”

“Now if we allow male to male or female to female, then that makes us worse than animals.”

While same-sex marriage has yet to be legalized in the Philippines, naturally, Pacquiao’s statements comparing it to animals have caused quite a stir in the country.

It is also worth pointing out that there are countless species (including mammals) that engage in behavior that could be interpreted as homosexual or bisexual of nature. Whether it’s actual sexual activity, courtship, or even parenting, those have all been well documented to happen with same-sex pairs in the animal kingdom.

As for proving with certainty the actual motives, or sexual orientation, of animals that exhibit those behavior, that’s another matter for scientists to figure out. Either way, it exists, and essentially shows how much Manny’s premise isn’t actually “common sense”.
