Davis to renew feud with Spratt
Welterweight clash between ‘Irish Hand Grenade’ and ‘Secret Weapon’ set for MFC 30
Press Release – Marcus Davis has a new opponent – and a new weight class for his upcoming bout at MFC 30.
“The Irish Hand Grenade” will now square-off against fellow veteran Pete “The Secret Weapon” Spratt in a welterweight clash in the co-main event of the Up Close & Personal card slated for Friday, June 10 at the Mayfield Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. The HDNet Fights lineup will air live at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT (check local listings for channel designation).
Davis (18-8) was originally tabbed to fight Richie “Hell Boy” Whitson in a heated grudge match in the lightweight division at MFC 30, but Whitson was forced to withdraw due to a severe foot injury. Yet in Spratt (22-19), the MFC has found an opponent who will maintain a straightforward, striking rumble with Davis.
“There will be no shortage of fireworks in this fight,” touted MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich. “I can’t see anything but explosive excitement happening. This should be an awesome display – one of the best all-out wars the MFC has ever put together.”
The upcoming clash is also a rematch for the rivals who faced off back in April 2007. Davis survived some early troubles and eventually scored a victory via Achilles lock submission midway through Round 2. While both fighters have built up a great reputation for dishing out offensive onslaughts – Davis has six knockouts under his belt, and Spratt boasts 11 – they can also take as much punishment as they give out. Davis has been stopped by strikes only three times in 26 bouts, while Spratt just twice in 41 outings.
Spratt has saved some of his best outings for his stint in the MFC, and has won three of his last four under the organization’s banner. Following up on convincing knockout wins over Nathan Gunn and Luigi Fioravanti including the 2009 MFC Knockout of the Year honor, Spratt’s most-recent outing was a surprising submission verdict as he dusted off Demi Deeds with an armbar in the second round of their encounter at MFC 29. The San Antonio, Texas, native boasts careers wins over Robbie Lawler and Rich Clementi.
On the same MFC 29 card, Davis made his organizational debut and got the split-decision nod in a bruising battle against Curtis Demarce. The 38-year-old Bangor, Maine, product holds numerous notable career wins, besting the likes of Shonie Carter, Forrest Petz, Paul Taylor, Paul Kelly, and Chris Lytle.
