Max Griffin has experienced gas tank issues inside The Octagon, but a new military-inspired swimming regimen should solve all that.

“I get sweaty talking about it. For instance, on 9/11 we did 110 laps back-to-back,” Griffin told Bloody Elbow. The 110 laps were in honour of the 110 stories firefighters climbed on 9/11. “For an hour and 45 minutes it was lap after lap, 25 meters, 25 meters. It was almost 1.8 miles and we only had about seven seconds between each lap. It was terrible. After 20, 30, 40 it was like you were unconscious. It was like being in a float tank. Your mind just goes. I was really jacked up for a week after that.”

“I was like a zombie just so spent,” Griffin continued. “It’s terrible, but what did is make me calm. Make me calm in these stressful situations. It actually lowered my heart rate. My max heart rate used to be in the high 180s. Now it’s in the 160s.”

Griffin also detailed workouts involving bricks on his back, walking on the pool floor and more. One significant change in Griffin’s approach to training is who he puts first.

“I’m actually getting really selfish, all the way selfish, with me and my training,” he admitted. “Now I don’t give a s—t. I train where I wanna train, when I wanna train, what fits my scheduled, what works for me. If something doesn’t work for me, I don’t do it. If something works for me I do the s—t out of it. I know results and I like numbers and seeing how things work.”
