Mayweather would accept a lot of money to beat someone he’s already comfortably beaten.
Floyd Mayweather made a lot of money taking apart former UFC champion Conor McGregor in the boxing ring back in 2017, so why not try to do it again if the opportunity presents itself?
Mayweather is officially retired with a professional career mark of 50-0 in the ring, but coming out of retirement is easy and he’s done that multiple times over. In an interview with Fox Sports’ Shannon Sharpe, Mayweather said that if the money was right, he’d be up for a rematch with the Irishman easy money.
“If I could pick an easy $300 million, absolutely,” Mayweather said (via MMA Fighting). “Same way, same results.”
Mayweather won by 10th round TKO over McGregor, who was never dropped but was no doubt hurt and fatigued when the stoppage occurred. Floyd’s “money” nickname could not have been any more fitting when he earned well north of $100 million for one of the biggest pay-per-views in combat sports history.
At this stage of his life, Mayweather has no interest in facing the top active names in the sport, but if it’s a super lucrative fight against even UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, he’s down for that.
“Your health is your wealth,” Mayweather said. “So as far as me going out there and competing against a guy like Conor McGregor, or a guy that’s really inexperienced. Absolutely [I’d fight Khabib Nurmagomedov]. Those are $300 million fights.
“You have to make it make sense. Real sense. Certain type of dollars. I need to have my faculties also. I had my time. I had my era. It’s these young fighters’ era now. It’s OK for me to go fight a Khabib or a Conor – with those two fights alone, I could pick up $600 million. That don’t hurt to fight guys that just entertain. It’s all entertainment.”
McGregor is currently angling for a fight with Manny Pacquiao, although actual pen to paper isn’t close to reality at this point. One of the common (and completely misguided) beliefs of those who thought McGregor was that despite his inexperience in high-level boxing, his vaunted power in MMA would trouble the 40+ year old Mayweather. Floyd completely dismissed his power in blunt fashion.
“Conor McGregor can’t punch,” Mayweather said. “He can’t punch. I don’t even remember [the uppercut]. I’m having fun. I was like this dude punch so soft.”
