The MMA world was left in shock and awe earlier today (Sat., Oct. 24, 2020) after the conclusion of UFC 254’s main event as Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his retirement from the sport following a successful lightweight title defense against Justin Gaethje.
Out of all the reaction around social media regarding Khabib’s retirement, none was more sought after than that of Conor McGregor. As you may know, McGregor and Khabib share one of the biggest rivalries in MMA history and have continued to clash heads in the media since their lone encounter back at UFC 229, which Khabib won via fourth-round submission.
McGregor, who has been trying to land a rematch against Khabib for two years, wasted little time taking to Twitter and offering a message to his biggest rival. It may come as a surprise, but McGregor was very cordial in his reaction, even offering his condolences again for Khabib’s father, who passed away back in July.
Good performance @TeamKhabib.
I will carry on.
Respect and condolences on your father again also. To you and family.
Yours sincerely, The McGregors.— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) October 24, 2020
“Good performance @TeamKhabib. I will carry on. Respect and condolences on your father again also. To you and family. Yours sincerely, The McGregors,” wrote McGregor.
Looks like we will never get that rematch in Moscow.
McGregor, who is coming off a TKO win over Donald Cerrone this past January, has been angling for another shot at the lightweight title ever since he lost to Khabib back in 2018. He is currently expected to fight Dustin Poirier this coming January which could now end up becoming a vacant lightweight title fight.
