Midnight Mania! Jon Jones says Cormier crying was “a beautiful thing”

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Jon Jones can afford to be gracious now. He beat Daniel Cormier, asserted his dominance over his greatest and most vocal rival, and is likely now the greatest of all time (GOAT). Now that he is no longer threatened, he has become quite magnanimous to Cormier, even saying on the Sway in the Morning show that he wants to make amends with the two-time Olympian. Transcript via MMAFighting.com:

“I’d like to be cool with him. Especially being a young black man, there’s not too many black men in the sport so I think that it’s sad when we’re at each other’s throats. If anything, we should be rallying around each other, supporting each other, and lifting each other up.

“So I would like to eventually get to a place where we can support each other, do charity events together, do an interview together and talk about our beef. The same way Mike Tyson and [Evander] Holyfield came together years later and talked about the matches they had, I would love to be able to do something with Daniel Cormier. I think people would like to see us mend things.”

That’s doubtless easier for Jones to say than it will be for Cormier, who was interviewing crying and crestfallen by Joe Rogan immediately after the knockout loss. Jones, despite claiming he wanted to make Cormier cry, said it was hard for him to watch.

“It was tough to watch him cry though because he’s such a good ambassador of our sport and I feel those one-on-one sports like MMA, boxing, these are sports where you see grown men cry because your success is all on your shoulders, whereas on a basketball team or football team you can blame it on the other guys out there with you. You can say, I gave it my all but my team was off that day. But in MMA, it’s all you out there and it’s such a person thing when you’re defeated. The legacy and everything, they’re not talking about your team, they’re talking about you forever. So the way men get attached to this sport, it’s a beautiful thing and it just shows how much this means to him.”

It is pretty incredible that Jones, who knocked Cormier out, who has made a career out of crushing the hopes and dreams of other fighters, who has never suffered defeat himself, can talk about Cormier bawling his eyes out as a beautiful thing. Perhaps it is. Perhaps, though, he would feel differently if he had awakened on the other side of a knockout.

Cris Cyborg gunning for a Gina Carano rematch. That makes sense in exactly one person’s mind- Cyborg’s. (and perhaps her manager’s)

if @ginacarano came back it would be as big of a moment 4 the sport! If Carano wanted a fight at 155 I would do the superfight rematch at LW https://t.co/vqffwanf3y
