Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Kevin Lee might someday find himself at welterweight. After missing weight for the first time against Edson Barboza this past weekend, Lee has admitted the idea intrigues him, but he wants a clearer title picture first. Via BloodyElbow.com:

“It’s some options to be had at 170,” Lee told MMAjunkie after his fifth-round TKO of Barboza. “Right now they (expletive) around with this whole interim title (between Rafael dos Anjos and Colby Covington at UFC 225) and the top of that division is kind of muddy right now. It don’t really seem like there’s too much there right now.”

Lee was beaten by Tony Ferguson for the interim title via triangle choke, coming into the bout with a staph infection that seemed to suck his energy. He had no trouble with his cardio against Barboza, making good on his promise to do what Khabib did to Barboza, only better (or worse, depending on perspective). The win bounces him back towards the top of the lightweight division, which is where his focus is.

He did say, though, he would love a prospective 165-lb. weight class, which, unlike weight classes at the higher or lower ends of the distribution, would have an ample stock of fighters from the bulging middle of the population curve.

“155 is where I’ve been focusing. So many good fights. The best fighters at 155. I love a challenge. Yeah, 170 is there, maybe for the future, but right now I’ve got to get that gold around me. But (165) would probably entertain me a little bit more.”

“I’m going to sit back, I’m going to make some adjustments,” he said. “I’m going to take some time. I would love a 165 weight class. I’ve been calling for it for a long time. I wish more guys would call for it. A ’65 weight class definitely needs to be made. I still feel like that’s where I’ll truly shine, you’ll see the best version of me. But in the meantime I’ll make my adjustments, and we’ll see how this whole thing works.”

Does Lee have a point about 165? With Eddie Alvarez, Tony Ferguson and Dustin Poirier also in the mix to face new champion Khabib-not to mention the name of a certain well-known Irish fighter- does Lee have a case for Khabib Time? He says he will fight for a lot less than McGregor will– but of course, he will also make the UFC a lot less than a fight with McGregor.

The UFC’s actions in paying Leslie Smith to not fight and declining to renew her contract may trigger a National Labor Relations Board review as to the status of UFC fighters as contractors or employees; they are also fodder for Project Spearhead’s marketing.

This was Leslie’s side of the story (worth a reminder that just two weeks ago they claimed they wouldn’t pay out win bonuses because they “aren’t that rich”)

Michael Chandler is also in the free agency market, and he’s got options in front of him. Surely he could hang with the UFC’s top lightweights, but will he make the jump?

I never saw Alastair Overeem choke out a young Vitor Belfort before. The similarity between their long, at times chemically-enhanced careers in both independent organizations and the UFC is interesting to consider.

Clearly Khabib Nurmagomedov’s best preparation option for his next opponent.
