MMA: UFC 208 Silva vs Brunson

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight!

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Conor McGregor jumps on Twitter, and the world takes note. Since the “Notorious” Irishman published his personal pound-for-pound/greatest of all time (GOAT) rankings online, there’s been plenty of talk. A great deal of his fellow fighters struck back online, and even with his own rubric, McGregor landed in the second place spot to Anderson Silva.

Apparently, McGregor’s list gathered enough attention that it warranted a revisit, as McGregor took to Twitter to fully claim GOAT status earlier tonight. Once again, McGregor chooses criteria based on what looks good and blurs the facts — how exactly did he win more titles than the other three again?

McGregor’s most recent Twitter flex aside, all this GOAT talk has drawn Anderson Silva back into the mix again. The former Middleweight kingpin hasn’t won a fight since 2017 and has not competed below 185-pounds since 2001, but that hasn’t stopped him from calling for a scrap with McGregor at 176 lbs.

The translated caption: I have an immense admiration for the great athlete Conor and I believe that a super fight would be something historic for the sport, neither of us need to prove anything to anyone; i believe ufc and sport fans would like to see this great martial show, testing my martial skills with him would be fantastic!!

While the match itself is definitely a huge long shot that really does not need to happen, it would undeniably generate a ton of revenue. Currently, neither man has a fight booked, so I guess hope is alive for any fervent fans dreaming of a weird, PRIDE-style freaky fight?

Insomnia

Apparently, Dana White and co. are not too mad at John Olivier if they’re willing to borrow his ideas.

It’s confirmed: Francis Ngannou is definitely scared of Jon Jones.

Frankly, this little knee to the thigh just seems rude!

The forgotten Welterweight contender, Leon Edwards, remains down to fight for a title.

Demetrious Johnson took to the track and showed off his hops. Has there ever been a fighter able to routinely push such a ridiculous pace at “Mighty Mouse?”

Meanwhile, Colby Covington is embarking on his own personal variation of my favorite arc on The Office.

Slips, rips, and KO clips

Tyron Woodley provided us with one of the greatest block-and-return counters in UFC history opposite Josh Koscheck.

A slick and devastating series of Southpaw uppercuts:

Semi-retired Bellator champion and BJJ legend Rafael Lovato Jr scoring a gorgeous kimura sweep from half guard:

A hail story that looks more likely artillery fire:

Midnight Music: I listened to a lot of Joy Division tonight, including their live album Les Bains Douches 18 December 1979, which features a ton of their best-known songs on an even higher level of intensity.

Sleep well Maniacs! More martial arts madness is always on the way.
