The opening bout on the main card of UFC 204 featured a featherweight scrap between late replacement Russell Doane (14-7) and Mirsad Bektic (11-0). Doane suffered his fourth straight loss, while Bektic’s return from over a yearlong layoff was a success.
Bektic moved in and out and threw combinations early. He used his hands to set up a takedown. Doane got back to his feet, but his opponent held onto his back. Doane stayed on his feet despite Bektic’s efforts to bring him down. Finally, Bektic dragged his opponent down and worked for a rear-naked choke. He found the neck of Doane and forced the tap.
Final Result: Mirsad Bektic def. Russell Doane via Submission (rear-naked choke) – R1, 4:22
