Heavyweight brother combination Valentijn and Alistair Overeem will both be fighting at this weekend’s Strikeforce event in Dallas, Texas. It has been a long road for both, but it has all led to them competing on the same night.
In this video, the older of the two, Valentijn, got a crack at former UFC Heavyweight and Light-Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture in the King of Kings 2000 Semifinals in the Rings organization. Couture was currently the UFC heavyweight champion when this fight took place on February 24, 2001.
Quickly into Round 1, Overeem locked “The Natural” in a guillotine choke, forcing him to submit 56 seconds into the fight. Valentijn would go on to lose to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the finals.
Although Valentijn and Alistair have a combined 25 knockouts and are known primarily for their kickboxing skills, they have a total of 36 submission victories together, 17 of which are by Valentijn. The guillotine choke is one of their specialties, and they have submitted many opponents with it.
“The Python” (29-25) will be taking on Chad Griggs (10-1) in a three-round heavyweight bout this weekend. Griggs is currently on a five-fight win streak with a win over Bobby Lashley. Valentijn is on a three-fight win streak.
“The Demolition Man” (34-11) will be taking on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1) in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix quarterfinal bout. Alistair is the current Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion, but he is not defending his title. Both are top-10 heavyweights and will advance in both rankings and the competition with a victory.
