Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) overhauled its official rankings in the wake of the UFC 241 pay-per-view (PPV) event last Sat. night (Aug. 17, 2019), which took place inside Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., and featured multiple top-ranked fighters (get full results here).
Former heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier tumbled several spots on the promotion’s pound-for-pound list, thanks to a fourth-round technical knockout loss to Stipe Miocic (highlights). They also switched places on the heavyweight chart, where “DC” is now ranked No. 2.
Middleweight bruiser Paulo Costa turned away Yoel Romero to announce his contendership at 185 pounds (video replay here), taking over the No. 2 spot in the process. “Soldier of God” drops one place to No. 3 after his unanimous decision defeat.
In the UFC 241 co-main event, Nate Diaz captured a sweep on the judges’ scorecards to debut at No. 7 in the welterweight rankings, sending former lightweight champion, Anthony Pettis, down to No. 12 in defeat (see it again here).
Here’s how the rankings work, courtesy of UFC.com:
Rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.
