Opportunities abound for female strawweight fighters

Business is starting to pick up for female strawweight fighters.

By now you know that The Ultimate Fighter season 20 will feature 16 of the best 115-pound fighters vying to become the first UFC strawweight champion. The organization has already chosen 11 of those 16 fighters, and on Tuesday, the UFC announced tryout details:

* Tryouts will take place April 28 in Las Vegas.

* Fighters must be between the ages of 21 and 34.

* Must have the legal ability to live and work in the United States of America.

* Fighters must have a winning record.

After TUF 17, the UFC scrapped its minimum three-fight rule, opting instead for fighters simply with a winning record. TUF 20 will begin filming in May and air on FOX Sports 1 on Sept. 10. For more on the tryouts, click here.

But that’s not all. the Tuff-N-Uff amateur promotion also announced on Tuesday that it will be holding a four-woman strawweight tournament beginning April 11 with the winner earning an Invicta FC contract, the organization that helped showcase that division to the world.

The four fighters in the tournament are Jianna Denizard (5-2), Jamie Moyle (3-2, pictured), Laura Uyeda (5-0) and Molly Wren-Holmes (4-0). The semifinals will take place at the Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, while the finals will be held June 7 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Long ignored, all of a sudden the female strawweight division has become somewhat of a hot commodity in MMA.
