UFC Fight Night: Ortega v The Korean Zombie

Chan Sung Jung and Brian Ortega face off tonight (Sat., Oct. 17, 2020) in a main event Featherweight clash from “Fight Island” inside Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. More than most high-profile bouts, this match up has been clearly labeled a title eliminator. “The Korean Zombie” rode a serious wave of momentum into his main event slot, having decimated his last two opponents with ease. Ortega, meanwhile, has been on the sidelines for nearly two years, but he can nevertheless jump right back into contention.

As it turned out, the layoff did Ortega a ton of good! The jiu-jitsu ace came out with a new look and a new stance, picking his opponent apart cleanly across 25 minutes to win the decision.

Round One

Ortega lands a hard kick to the lead leg early, and Jung returns the favor. Patient start to the fight from both men. Ortega landed the longer strikes, sticking jabs and low kicks at a higher rate. Clean right hook scores for Ortega! Ortega fighting well from the Southpaw stance, but Jung isn’t throwing all that much. “Korean Zombie” kicks the calf. Ortega counters a kick with a clean cross that seemingly hurts Jung! Heavy right hand scores for Jung on the counter. Ortega fires a snap kick near the bell to end a strong opening round.

Round Two

Jung opens the second round by kicking at the calf. Jung eats a low kick then scores with a combination. Ortega switches back Orthodox, takes a calf kick and goes back to Southpaw. Ortega gets in on a single leg, but Jung stuffs it without much difficulty. Ortega lands a clean overhand left after a takedown feint. Jung lands a hook-cross with his foe backed to the fence, then he scores with an uppercut. Ortega kicks the mid-section. Jung tries to jump into a left hook and eats a PERFECT spinning elbow! Jung is rocked and these two are brawling! Ortega scores a takedown along the fence, but time is short. Jung stands back up and is dragged back down with just 10 seconds remaining. He survives the round.

Round Three

Jung returns to his chopping low kicks, which are definitely doing damage. Ortega snaps a jab. One more! Jung lands a stiff right hand, takes a body kick. Ortega lands a good straight to the mid-section, but Jung fires back with a combination. Ortega digs a low kick. Yet another stiff jab scores from Ortega, and his feints are working really well too. Left hand lands for Ortega. Ortega is flowing, and “KZ” cannot find his timing on the counter. Ortega shoots a single and lands a big hook on the break. Ortega tries a spin, eats a right hand for his efforts.

Round Four

Jung backs his foe into the fence early, but Ortega calmly circles with range strikes. Big overhand left scores for Ortega. Ripping body kick scores for Ortega. Ortega attempts a takedown, lands a heavy punch, then scores the takedown. When Jung stands, he absorbs a nasty elbow that splits him open. Ortega rips another body kick, and he’s just styling on “The Korean Zombie.” Check hook scores for Ortega. Ortega counters a kick with a couple hard punches. Cross-hook partially lands for Jung. Jung lands a couple kicks, but that’s really the only success he can find. Ortega attempts a takedown in the final 10 seconds, but it doesn’t happen.

Round Five

Jung advancing early, targets the body. Ortega lands a right hook off a takedown feint. Hook-cross lands clean for “T-City.” Jung scores with a left hook. Ortega snaps his foes head back with a couple straight punches. Good body kick lands for Jung, but he eats a counter hook. Ortega continues to stick and move with incredible consistency. Jung is covered in blood and unable to let loose with his hands. Ortega scoring tons of jabs with a minute remaining. Jung connects on a left hook. Jung is pressing through punches, trying to make a miracle happen. It does not.

Result: Brian Ortega defeats Chan Sung Jung via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)
