Fight fans witnessed one of the rarest submission finishes in all of mixed martial arts (MMA) earlier today (Sat., June 8, 2024) at FCC 38 live on UFC Fight Pass from inside The Olympia in Liverpool, England, as undefeated prospect William Haycox stopped Welsch fighter, Ryan Lockyer, with a first-round banana split.

Saturday offered a ton of action including UFC Louisville, PFL Newcastle, and Oktagon 58, but it was FCC 38 that produced a true treat for grappling fans everywhere. There are just some finishes that don’t come around too often — such as a twister or an Ezekiel choke — and the banana split is one of them.

Haycox, who came into this fight with a 2-0 professional record, pulled off some pretty good submissions during his amateur career. This included a Teepee choke and a Von Flue choke, so he’s quite familiar with putting himself in positions to finish guys with rare techniques.

With just over 60 seconds left in the first round Haycox was able to tie up one of Lockyer’s legs with his own. He then grabbed a hold Haycox’s other leg and knee and began to stretch in both directions. Lockyer was immediately in trouble and tapped just a few seconds later. It was pretty awesome to see, but a horrible way to get stopped if you’re Lockyer.
