Veteran fighter Alistair Overeem is not yet ready to talk about title shots, even after his first-round TKO win over Alexey Oleinik.
Alistair Overeem notched his second straight win on Saturday night in St. Petersburg, Russia with a first-round TKO win over Alexey Oleynik. But even with this mini-win streak, the 38-year-old UFC veteran is not interested in title shots just yet.
“I’m going to take a little break, a little holiday break before we’re gonna start on victory number three,” Overeem told reporters during a post-fight scrum (transcript via MMA Fighting). “I’m aiming for September. Fight again September and then maybe again later in the year.
“But after three wins, we will start talking about the title. Not yet. It’s too soon.”
Overem was originally scheduled to fight Alexander Volkov, who pulled out due health issues early this month. And if it were up to him, this is a fight that should still happen.
“I was very prepared to fight Alexander Volkov, I was looking forward to that fight,” he said. “That fight did not happen tonight, but hopefully the next UFC fight will be Alexander Volkov.
“To me, Alexander Volkov is still ranked somewhere there, we were supposed to fight tonight,” he added. “I’m still looking for that fight and other than that — let’s do that first and then we’ll figure out who comes after.”
With the win over Oleynik, the number seven-ranked Overeem now holds a record of 45-17 (with 1 NC and 40 wins by stoppage).
