Can’t a man catch a break?

It’s only been a few hours since Dustin Poirier’s five-round slugfest with Dan Hooker at UFC on ESPN 12, but Ariel Helwani is already thinking about ‘The Diamond’s’ next matchup.

Helwani said he would like to see Poirier face Ferguson following his hard-fought unanimous decision win over Hooker but the top-three UFC lightweight isn’t ready to start thinking about his next opponent just yet.

“Damn!! Let me rest bruh!!!” Poirier responded to Helwani.

Poirier vs. Hooker was crowned UFC on ESPN 12’s Fight of the Night and both men walked away with a $50,000 post-fight bonus. Hooker got the better of Poirier in the opening rounds but Poirier overwhelmed ‘The Hangman’ with sheer volume in the later rounds, rightfully earning a unanimous decision victory.

The win saw Poirier rebound from his crushing lightweight title defeat to undefeated lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242, which saw Khabib submit Poirier in the third round. As of writing, Poirier is ranked #3 in the official UFC lightweight fighter rankings.

Ferguson, who is ranked #2, will be looking to rebound from his TKO loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249.
