McGregor did not make a promised $500,000 donation to Poirier’s “The Good Fight Foundation.”
On the day when it was made official that Dustin Poirier will have his trilogy with Conor McGregor this summer, ‘The Diamond’ issued a statement on his recent public spat with the Irish superstar.
Poirier called out McGregor earlier in the week for not making his promised $500,000 donation to “The Good Fight Foundation.” McGregor and his manager Audie Attar put the onus on Poirier and his team by claiming no clarity was given on where the money would be spent. Poirier responded by saying Conor’s team “hasn’t responded to our emails about anything involving my foundation after they reached out to us originally.” Conor even briefly threatened to pull out of the fight but that lasted not even 10 minutes.
In a statement published on Twitter, Poirier addressed the charity situation and expressed regret over making all of this public.
“I am very passionate about my charity as you all know,” Poirier wrote. “I jumped the gun and took my private matters between Conor and my foundation public. My mistake, we live, we learn. Spreading positivity and doing good is my goal!
“I feel like I have brought a negative energy and personal opinions into something I am working so hard on that gives people a reason to cheer and smile. I will take this in stride and continue to fight the good fight! New goal coming soon and it is a big one. Thank you to all who is involved and all the supporters who believe in our vision.”
Poirier has historically auctioned off his own fight gear and put the proceeds to his charity, as have recent opponents Max Holloway and Khabib Nurmagomedov. Needless to say, I have a feeling this will be the centerpiece of promoting this fight over the next few months.
With the score evened at one knockout apiece following Dustin’s win at UFC 257, this rivalry will be settled at UFC 264 on July 10th in front of an expected full capacity crowd at T-Mobile Arena.
