Promoters: Mayweather-McGregor was ‘one of the smoothest deals ever made’

Unlike most super bouts in boxing, the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight deal was a smooth process, according to the promoters involved.

Unlike the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight that was five years in the making, it only took more than a year since talks first surfaced for the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor deal to be finalized. And according to promoters involved, the overall process was completed with very little headaches.

“It’s been one of the smoothest deals we’ve ever done,” said UFC president Dana White during Wednesday’s conference call (via ESPN.com).

“It was one of the smoothest I’ve ever been involved in,” Showtime sports head honcho Stephen Espinoza, in turn, said.

It was also concurred by Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, saying “This is really gonna be a lot of fun. I can’t wait to get started with this.”

“It’s the right fight in the right place at the right time,” White added. “I thought it would be impossible to deal with Floyd Mayweather, Mayweather Promotions, [Mayweather adviser and principal negotiator] Al Haymon and Showtime.”

Ellerbe, for his part, has been greatly impressed by McGregor’s performances in the UFC, and says the Mayweather camp is fully aware about what he can bring to the table. In fact, he is already confident that this fight will be able to at the very least equal the revenue that was raked in by the Pacquiao fight, which totaled to more than $500 million.

“With Mayweather-Pacquiao, that was a fight the fans had been talking about for years,” Ellerbe said. “There’s not one place I go to or Floyd goes to or anyone affiliated or associated with Floyd Mayweather goes who doesn’t get asked, ‘Are you going to fight Conor McGregor?’ This is a very, very hot fight. This is a fight the fans want. This is going to be a tremendous event.”

Another big factor for the making of the fight was the money that all parties involved would potentially be making. No one threw out any specific amount, but according to White, everyone was completely satisfied with how the deal turned out, in terms of the financial aspect.

“Nobody is bummed out about the deal,” White simply said.

The Mayweather-McGregor super fight is scheduled for August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
