Rafael dos Anjos calls out Khabib Nurmagomedov – for July

Khabib Nurmagomedov wants to stay on the April 16th card despite losing an opponent. But he’s being called out by a champion for a July fight.

It’s not often that a champion calls out a contender, but that is the case here. Khabib Nurmagomedov is opponent-less for UFC on Fox 19 after Tony Ferguson was forced to withdraw from the card. The UFC has shuffled Rashad Evans vs. Glover Teixeira up to the headliner, seemingly leaving Khabib on the sidelines..

While Donald Cerrone has offered to step up to fight that night, a more alluring option for Nurmy might be an immediate title shot – but he would have to wait three months. UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos tweeted this about Nurmagomedov:

Sorry to hear Ferguson is out. @TeamKhabib We have some unfinished business, I’ll be ready in July @danawhite @lorenzofertitta #Jesusfirst

The unfinished business he’s referring to is Khabib’s April 2014 decision win over RDA. After that fight, Dos Anjos won three in a row to earn a title shot, unseating champion Anthony Pettis and defending once against Cerrone. He was supposed to fight Conor McGregor at UFC 196, but was forced out with an injury – which will heal up in July.

Unfortunately for RDA, Khabib couldn’t help but come back with a barb about his win:

@RdosAnjosMMA I believe it was clear to everyone last time. Or “Fake champ” title still torturing you? pic.twitter.com/Xex1N5evba

He also made it clear that he wants to fight next weekend:

Pettis, Cowboy, RDA or somebody, anyone and any weight. 16 April I’m waiting for you guys. @danawhite @lorenzofertitta #InshaAllahVictory

Can the UFC put together the Cerrone fight? Would Nurmagomedov be in line for a July title fight without competing on this card? So many questions! We will probably know at least some of the answers soon.
