Ray Borg almost didn’t make it to UFC Philadelphia after a weight-cut gone wrong.

The UFC bantamweight and former flyweight title challenger hit his head on the bathtub while attempting to cut weight and subsequently found himself in the hospital.

“The bad luck bug almost struck me again,” Borg told The Luke Thomas Show on Monday. “As I took a step, I took a step and I slipped, and I hit my head on the bathtub.” Borg’s hotel did not have a steam room and sauna, so he and his team “had to make our own sauna and steam room out of bathroom along with the hot tub.”

“They did a CAT scan, they did a little X-Ray to my wrist,” Borg recalled, per a transcript by MMAJunkie. “I hit my wrist trying to catch the fall, and they said, ‘OK, well, you hurt your hand.’ And I said, ‘You know what, I’m not not showing up to this fight, I’m going to make it to this fight, so you know, I feel fine, I can fight.’ And the doctor said ‘okay.’”

Borg finally made his way out of the hospital around 3 a.m., but he still had weigh to shed. “I was just exhausted, so we stayed up until 5:30 [a.m.] in the morning to cut as much weight as we can in 2-and-a-half hours,” Borg said, per a trans. “And I was just utterly exhausted, so I took about an hour-and-a-half nap, woke back up and just tried to cut that weight.”

The small window to finish cutting weight took to great a toll on Borg’s body: “I’m literally dead. I just had an hour of sleep in the last 34 hours, so it was my choice to not to finish trying to finish cutting the weight. I was just physically and mentally exhausted from the night before.”

Borg, 25, subsequently missed the bantamweight limit by two-pounds and went on to lose a contentious decision to UFC newcomer Casey Kenney. He has twice missed weight before at flyweight.
