There’s been much talk about Conor McGregor’s oft-discussed UFC return, but nothing concrete. That could change soon, however, as McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 3 could potentially happen later this year.

News just broke that Donald Cerrone, who was in discussion to meet McGregor, will be facing Al Iaquinta in the UFC Ottawa headliner on May 4. According to Ariel Helwani, the signing of that bout could open the path for the long-rumored McGregor vs. Diaz trilogy. The story is still developing.

McGregor and Diaz obviously share a ton of history. Their rivalry is arguably the biggest in UFC history. They combined to create two monstrous million-plus buy pay-per-view events in 2016. Diaz won the first, submitting McGregor on short notice at March 2016’s UFC 196. The two then met in a rematch, with McGregor beating Diaz by decision in a classic five-round war.

Diaz has been out of action ever since. He was scheduled to return against Dustin Poirier at last year’s UFC 230, but that fight fell apart when “The Diamond” was injured.

McGregor was last seen losing a one-sided submission to current champ Khabib Nurmagomedov in his last bout. He has not won a UFC fight since he won the lightweight title against Eddie Alvarez in the bout following the Diaz rematch. The Diaz trilogy would present him an opportunity to get back on track against an opponent he has beaten, albeit one who has beaten him.

Due to overall inactivity, their rivalry has certainly cooled off quite a bit. However, it most likely wouldn’t take more than the fight’s announcement to get the lights switch back on again.

Do you want to see it, or has that ship sailed?
