Report: Khabib vs Ferguson interim title fight expected for UFC 209

Respected Russian outlet Izvestia.ru is reporting that an interim lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson will headline UFC 209.

It appears as though the next challenger to Conor McGregor’s lightweight title will be determined on March 4, 2017.

According to notable Russian outlet Izvestia.ru, Khabib Nurmagomedov will meet Tony Ferguson in the headlining act of UFC 209 in Las Vegas. The outlet also confirmed that the news will be announced by UFC president Dana White in the coming days. However, UFC officials would not confirm of deny the news when asked.

“To date, we have a selection of participants for the tournament UFC 209,” sources within the organization told Izvestia.ru. “Are Nurmagomedov and Ferguson among the participants of the tournament? While we can not provide this information, wait for the official release. Soon you will know everything.”

Last week, Khabib revealed that there was a “90-percent chance” that he would face Ferguson in his next professional outing. Despite earlier reports that the UFC had not decided whether a potential Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson fight would be for an interim lightweight title in McGregor’s absence, it appears as though the expected UFC 209 headliner will be for the interim lightweight title. This will mark the second interim title fight announced this month.

UFC 209 is scheduled to take place on March 4, 2017, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
