Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight contender Volkan Oezdemir was arrested Saturday (Nov. 18, 2017) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on an aggravated battery charge causing bodily harm or disability.

That’s according to MMA Junkie, who brought word of the arrest.

While details of the incident which lead to his arrest were kept under wraps, all that is certain at the moment is Volkan’s currently behind bars inside Broward County jail awaiting a hearing for bail.

This is a tough blow for Oezdemir, as a 205-pound title fight against division champion Daniel Cormier was all but finalized. And while the combatants had yet to put pen to paper, it remains to be seen if Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) goes ahead with the booking in light of these reports.

After knocking out Jimi Manuwa at UFC 214 this past summer, Volkan revealed plans to train in Florida for his potential title fight. His win over Manuwa was his third straight inside the Octagon, all of which came in 2017.

Indeed, Oezdemir quickly got on people’s radar with his knack for ending fights rather quickly, and firmly cemented himself as the top contender to the throne in what is perhaps the fastest a contender fought himself to the big dance.
