With a cut to the head of UFC on FUEL TV 9 headliner Alexander ‘The Mauler’ Gustafsson almost certainly forcing the Swede out of this weekends fight with Gegard Mousasi (33-3-2), fan favorite Wanderlei ‘The Axe Murderer’ Silva (35-12-1, 1NC) has announced that he will be meeting Mousasi at this Saturday’s event.
Silva took to Twitter (@wandfc) to say that he had been contacted about the fight and that he was willing to step in on less than a weeks notice.
– UFC news my guys fight Saturday agains Musasi!!! What you think? UFC just contact me about Saturday,UFC acabeu de me ligar o que acha?
– I am read I don’t have any injure and training a lot,to treinadinho e sem lesao nenhuma!!!
Silva also confirmed the news with MMAWeekly.com via text on Monday night.
“I gonna fight Mousasi on Saturday,” Silva responded.
Mousasi hasn’t received the news yet but is willing to throw-down with ‘The Axe Murderer’ (@mousasi_mma).
– @wandfc hey mr Silva, if this is true and you are ready to fight me than I accept the fight, It’s an honor for me Much respect for you
– @ufc @danawhite at this moment I do not have any new info about my situation But if ufc want’s and mr @wandfc is ready for me than let’s Go!
UFC on FUEL TV 9 is scheduled to take place on April 6, 2013 at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
If Silva does step in versus Mousasi, it’s a sure bet that fans won’t be treated to the same type of match ‘The Axe Murderer’ had in his last fight last month. Silva won an exciting second round victory over Brian Stann at UFC on FUEL TV 8 in Japan in a bout that is certain to be up for “Fight of the Year.”
Silva is 2-1 and will take his second straight bout at light heavyweight following the knockout win against Stann. Prior to that he lost by decision to Rich Franklin at UFC 147 competing in a 190-lb catchweight bout.
Mousasi will make his Octagon debut and enters the cage on a six-fight undefeated streak. He fought at the final Strikeforce event, picking up a first round submission over Mike Kyle in Oklahoma.
