There has been talk already of the Ultimate Fighting Championship making it’s way to Sweden sometime in the near future, now it appears that the promotion is headed to the city of Malmö, located on the countries southern coast across from Denmark.
The news was reported by FightPlay.tv who confirmed the update from a reliable source within the TapouT organization, noting that show will be a UFC Fight Night event, not a pay-per-view event, and will take place on November 5.
The website has also gone on to confirm the signing of Norwegian fighter Jon-Olav Einemo (7-1) to the UFC. Einemo is currently part of the Golden Glory gym and is a former 2003 ADCC champion, who is the only person to ever hold a win over Roger Gracie at the ADCC Submission Grappling Championships event. As a mixed martial arts fighter he’s fought at heavyweight in the past for both PRIDE and Shooto.
UFC light heavyweight, and notable Swedish fighter, Alexander Gustaffson recently defeated James Te-Huna at UFC 127 in Australia to improve his UFC record to 3-1.
While no official word has come from the UFC, and at this time it is strictly a rumor, an event in Malmö would be held at the Malmö Arena (picture) which has a seating capacity of 15,000+ for concerts at the venue. A UFC Fight Night event would certainly sell out the arena and offer the promotion a new market to move into.
I guess we’ll have to see if this rumor proves true or not.
Props to FightersOnlyMagazine.com for the update.
