After Sam King’s first amateur mixed martial arts match—a stunning first-round knockout victory at Saturday Night Fights 4 in December—he contended that he would be hard-pressed to find a better way to begin his career.

In King’s second outing—a first-round submission win at Saturday Night Fights 5 earlier this month—the 21-year-old Regina product effectively proved that his debut wasn’t a fluke.

But which method of victory—quick knockout or fast submission—does the young mixed martial artist prefer?

“I prefer having my hand raised in the end—that’s what I prefer,” King noted, holding back a smile. “It doesn’t matter … Regardless, it feels great—it really feels great.”

Although King isn’t sure when or where his next fight will take place—“hopefully sometime soon,” he offered—he insisted that he intends on having his hand raised in victory more than a few more times in the coming years.

“I’ll stop when I’m at the top,” King said.

According to AJ Scales, who has been training King at Regina’s Complete Martial Arts and Fitness for the better part of the past half decade, he believes that the future is bright for his emerging protégé.

“I’m not going to say that I know everything,” said Scales, a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under the Nova Uniao banner who is also an undefeated mixed martial artist. “But I’ve got a great idea of how to make this kid grow in the sport and I guarantee you that you’re going to see a lot of great things out of him.”
