Santiago Ponzinibbio, originally scheduled to meet “Marajo” at UFC 175 in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 5, was forced out of the card with a knee injury. The Team Nogueira welterweight will need surgery to fix his injured knee.
“I got injured last weekend,” Ponzinibbio said in a release. “I was training jiu-jitsu when my training partner heard my knee pop. I went to the doctor on Monday morning to see what happened and heard that I torn the meniscus. It’s a complicated injury.”
Alcantara, who holds a 3-1 record under the UFC banner after a split decision win over Albert Tumenov at UFN 36, waits for a replacement.
“The UFC didn’t send me anything yet,” Alcantara told MMAFighting.com. “I haven’t heard from the UFC or my manager about it yet, but I want a new opponent. I want to continue in this card. I’ve been training for two months for this.”
UFC 175 takes place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center and is headlined by two championship fights. Chris Weidman puts the middleweight title on the line against former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida, while Ronda Rousey defends the bantamweight gold against Alexis Davis.
