A report by MMAFighting.com has the Ultimate Fighting Championship attempting to book a UFC heavyweight fight between Shane Carwin (12-1) and Roy Nelson (15-5).
Neither fighter has received an official offer but sources close to the UFC have noted that the organization is looking to book the fight for Jan. 1st New Year’s Day as part of UFC 125.
Carwin suffered his first career loss last summer against heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar at UFC 116. Carwin lost by submission in the second round of that fight. Before that fight, the heavyweight had won four straight in the UFC to earn that title shot having defeated Frank Mir, Gabriel Gonzaga, Neil Wain, and Christian Wellisch.
The former IFL heavyweight champ, Nelson, is also coming off a loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 117 in August. “Big Country” earned the “TUF 10″ season having defeated fellow teammate Brendan Schaub to earn the six figure contract. He then went on to earn a TKO victory over Stefan Struve at UFC Fight Night: Florian vs. Gomi.
Update: Shane Carwin posted this note on his Twitter page:
“I expect to be on the January 1st card. I do not have an opponent yet. Any takers? @UFC. I do not care who the opponent is.”
