Anthony Pettis will move up to the Welterweight division for the first time in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career this Saturday (March 23, 2019) when he faces off against Stephen Thompson in the main event of UFC Fight Night 148 in Nashville, Tennessee.

While it may seem like a random fight to some, Pettis says picking “Wonderboy” as his opponent for his 170-pound debut was for a reason, as it will pit together two of the best and most creative strikers in the sport today.

“For me, ‘Wonderboy’s’ success with Karate in the Octagon is one of the reasons why I chose this fight. I’m a fan, I’m a fan of that style because I brought that style in as well,” said Pettis during a recent interview with UFC News.

“The range fighting, the points, not getting hit. The movement, it’s just beautiful to watch. And two guys that can do it, I feel like it’s something the fans have to see, or the world has to see this.”

While Thompson will seemingly be the bigger man inside the Octagon, “Showtime” says Thompson shouldn’t underestimate just how big he will be once the cage door slams shut behind them.

“I think he is underestimating how big I am going to be in there, how strong I am going to be in there. The grappling division, I feel like I am way above him. I don’t see it turning into a grappling match, but if he wants to turn it into that, I am ready.”

Of course, no one expects the fight to hit the ground, as the two talented strikers will love to keep it on the feet if for nothing else to prove who the best striker is of the two. Pettis — who has left behind one highlight after another — says he will unleash something no one has yet to see.

“My gameplan — striking — is gonna shock the world. I feel like the way I’m gonna attack this fight, no one’s seen it before and I’m just gonna continue building off of this.”

Meanwhile, Thompson is more than capable of pulling out new tricks, as well, as he has also made a living out of of knocking peoples heads off with his creative and elusive technique. Either way, fight fans are sure to be in for a treat this Saturday.
