Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley, has volunteered to fill the main event slot for the upcoming UFC 230 pay-per-view (PPV) fight card, scheduled for Sat., Nov. 3, 2018 inside New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
Assuming his hand gets cleared by a physician.
And it sounds like interim titleholder, Colby Covington, is willing to meet him in “The Empire State,” though he’s not expecting the promotion to put pen to paper. Not because the fight isn’t worthy of a headlining spot, but rather because “The Chosen One” is loathed by the UFC brass.
“Tyron, that’s fake news about his hand being hurt. He was saying he was ready to go, but I think it’s more that the UFC, they don’t want to give him that spot,” Covington told BJPenn.com Radio. “They don’t want to reward him that main event, ’cause they hate him. He doesn’t know how to sell fights. He doesn’t know how to promote fights. He just complains, man. He just consistently shoots himself in the foot every time he opens his mouth.”
Covington is likely referring to Woodley’s outspoken views on how UFC fails to market him as champion, which not only hurts his own personal brand, but also keeps the promotion from attracting the “barbershop” demographic.
Woodley (19-3-1) is fresh off his second-round submission win over Darren Till at UFC 228 earlier this month in Dallas, Texas, while Covington (14-1) has been sidelined since mid-summer to deal with lingering nasal issues.
