UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic has revealed his eye injury is almost fully healed and says he expects to complete his trilogy with Daniel Cormier this summer.
According to his agent Jim Walter of Kaulig Sports and Entertainment, Miocic suffered a serious eye injury during his heavyweight rematch with Cormier at UFC 241 in August 2019, he said.
“Mr. Miocic sustained
a major retina injury from multiple eye pokes during his bout at UFC 241. Our
client’s health and safety is our top priority. We are excited for him to
return to action when he is healthy to compete in his seventh consecutive world
title fight.”
In a statement to ESPN the fighter himself refused to put a timeline on his return saying.
“I’ll be ready to
fight when I can see out of both eyes again. I can’t wait to defend my belt.”
Luckily for fight fans Miocic seems to be pretty much healed up and raring to go this summer. He’s slowly getting back into the gym and his vision is almost perfect right now.
Speaking to TMZ Sports, he said. “I’m good man can’t complain. The eye is really good actually. I feel its healed up. It’s getting better everyday and I’m getting back in the gym slowly. I’m just getting in there, trying to get in better shape and seeing how my body feels and making sure I feel good. “
The reporter then asked if his next fight would be against Cormier and despite originally wanting a new challenge after reclaiming his belt, Miocic seemed to be on board with the idea of a trilogy fight, he said.
Ye man! It’s looking like summer. A lot of these fights
are already booked up, so it’ll probably be summer time. If that’s what the UFC
want and the matchmaker. I always say without the matchmaker I wouldn’t be
fighting. It sucks for him (Daniel Cormier) he’s going to lose again.
