In one week, Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez will defend his title against Japanese fighter Tatsuya Kawajiri on the April 9 Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley card. In this interview by KNOXX gear, Melendez says he is looking to prove that he is the #1 lightweight in the world, and feels that eventually he’ll get the chance to fight for the UFC title in the short future.

In part one, “El Niño” talks about training for Kawajiri, Zuffa’s purchase of Strikeforce, the welterweight title fight between Team Caesar Gracie teammate Nick Diaz versus top challenger Paul Daley, and meeting the top lightweights in the UFC.

The second video has Melendez offering his thoughts on female fighters, the other title bout between teammate Jake Shields versus UFC champ Georges St-Pierre, and becoming a father.
