In the final bout of the evening, current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem (34-11, 1 NC) went up against Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1) in the final quarterfinal bout of the tournament. The winner will move on to face Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
Here is how the third and final round went down.
Before the round even started, it appeared that Werdum was so tired that he was just gonna fall over.
However, he came out throwing punches, some of which landed, before he shot in again. Overeem sprawled, controlled Werdum’s back, and stood back up.
Werdum then ate another right and left from Overeem, then jumped guard again. Overeem was in Werdum’s guard for about a minute before he got back up.
Werdum landed some more good punches, Overeem landed a couple of punches, and Werdum pulled guard again.
With two minutes left, Overeem was laying inside of Werdum’s guard, and either fighter was doing anything.
They finally stood back up with 30 seconds left, Overeem landed a knee, Werdum made Overeem’s face bloody, went for a kneebar with 10 seconds left, and the fight was over.
Official results: Alistair Overeem def Fabricio Werdum via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27).
