In the second bout of the evening on Showtime, two-time Olympian Daniel Cormier (7-0) took on the veteran Jeff Monson (42-11) in the second heavyweight bout of the evening.
Here is how the third and final round went down.
The final round started with Cormier throwing a pair of head kicks that missed their mark. After landing a few punches, Cormier moved in like he wanted to go for the takedown, but let it go in favor of standing up.
Then Cormier started pouring it on. A left hook, straight right, and a superman punch had Monson badly hurt. Monson tried to catch Cormier with a lead left hook, but they never found their mark.
Monson was able to recover, before eating a left hook and a right that had him shooting in for dear life. Once again he was able to recover.
With a minute left, Cormier just threw Monson down to the mat. After Monson got back up, Cormier landed more heavy kicks and punches until the horn sounded to end the fight.
Official result: Daniel Cormier def Jeff Monson via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
