Submission Underground 3 features crossover MMA and grappling stars

Dillon Danis vs. AJ Agazarm headline event that features Chad Mendes, Jeff Monson and others.

We are just four weeks into 2017 and the competitive grappling industry has put together a number of great events and matches. On Sunday, January 29 that list will grow Submission Underground 3 is set to bring together some of the biggest names in grappling and mixed martial arts for an exciting series of matches. This card continues the growing trend of blending MMA competitors with dedicated grapplers to see who comes out of top and it’s an event that has must see value.

Even last minute changes can’t derail the momentum of Submission Underground 3. Garry Tonon was originally expected to face former Bellator champion, Hector Lombard, who was forced out of the event and replaced by event creator, Chael Sonnen. The former UFC title challenger is hot off of his bout with Tito Ortiz at Bellator 170 — a fight he lost via submission — and he tried to step in to face one of the most dangerous grapplers in the game today. That was before Bellator acted and removed him from the event. Shaun Al-Shatti of MMA Fighting reported that the promotion pulled him from the card on Tuesday.

The main event of the evening features two of the best American grapplers today in Dillion Danis and AJ Agazarm. Both men boast resumes that include wins across the world in events such as the Pan Ams and multiple IBJJF events. Along with their ability to perform on the mat, both Danis and Agazarm are known for being two polarizing competitors on and off the mat. Just look back to Danis calling out UFC competitor, Nate Diaz or Agazarm getting kicked off of the stage by Vagner Rocha for two examples of how these competitors attract attention to the sport.

The card doesn’t end there as Gordon Ryan and Jeff Glover are facing off against MMA veterans Jeff Monson and Chad Mendes, respectively. Ryan and Glover are two well-known and exciting competitors facing off against former UFC title challengers. Andrew Alexander versus Joe Baize rounds out the main card for the evening.

Submission Underground 3 continues the promotional trend of bringing together the biggest names in competitive grappling and pitting them against athletes in the MMA space. As this aspect of the combat sports industry continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how this event and the promotion as a whole perform. Either way, Submission Underground 3 is an event that should attract fans of both genres. The show will be available for streaming via FloGrappling.com.
