After a four fight win streak that included two Fight of the Nights, Cub Swanson ended his UFC contract on a loss to Brian Ortega at the end of 2017. The good news: the UFC quickly re-signed him for more money. The bad news: they put him up against Frankie Edgar, who is looking less like a gatekeeper at 145 and more like a perennial contender.
Frankie dominated Cub over three rounds to take their rematch 30-27 on all three judges’ scorecards. Later that night, Swanson took to social media with his thoughts on the result.
”Well not the outcome I was looking for but that’s the fight game,” Swanson wrote. “Congrats Frankie & I’m sorry to hear about your father. To all my supporters: Thank you so much and I promise to come back stronger!”
As if taking the match up with Swanson just weeks after getting knocked out for the first time wasn’t enough, Edgar also stayed in following the death of his father at the start of April. That’s toughness you can’t deny, and it just makes Edgar’s latest win over Swanson all the more impressive.
As for Swanson, he’ll have to go back to the drawing board to figure out a route to the featherweight title. With his exciting style and a new contract in his back pocket, we’re looking forward to seeing more of him at the top of cards, win or lose.
