UFC light heavyweight Thiago Silva (14–3, 2 NC) has had his recent “Submission of the Night” victory at UFC on FUEL TV 6 overturned after testing positive for marijuana. Silva faced Stanislav Nedkov at the Macau, China event and earned a third round submission win.
Officials with the Ultimate Fighting Championship conducted their own medical suspensions and drug screening for the event. They released this statement on Silva’s positive marijuana test on Wednesday.
“Thiago Silva tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his bout at UFC on FUEL TV in Macau. The UFC organization has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents.
“Thiago Silva tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his bout at UFC on FUEL TV in Macau. Silva has admitted to taking the banned substance and has agreed to participate in an approved drug-rehabilitation program and serve a six-month suspension retroactive to the November 10 event. He must pass a drug test upon completion of the suspension before receiving clearance to fight again.”
This is the second time Silva has failed a drug screening having had a TKO win over Brandon Vera overturned to a “No Contest” back at UFC 125 in January 2011. Silva has not earned an official win inside the Octagon since August 2009 when he stopped Keith Jardine by first round knockout.
