When the day comes that any mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter decides the division title is completely out of reach, it’s probably in their best interest to retire from combat sports. Let’s face it, UFC salaries just aren’t good enough to make non-title face-punching a sustainable career.

Unless, of course, you’re this guy.

That’s why Stephen Thompson isn’t ready to hang ‘em up just yet, unless he’s just telling himself that to justify a prolonger UFC career. Despite his recent knockout loss to Anthony Pettis (see it again here), “Wonderboy” believes he’s still in line for a crack at the crown.

“Before this fight with Anthony Pettis, I was bumped back up to number three,” Thompson told Bloody Elbow. “A good win over Pettis would have shot me into title contention. Maybe one more fight after that. I guess God has other plans. I’m not giving up on the title. I’m 36 years-old and I still have a ton of fight in me. It may take me a few more fights but the way the UFC and the welterweight division is changing, anything can happen. I’m staying positive and I’m working hard.”

Thompson (14-4-1) is currently ranked No. 7 at 170 pounds and failed to win the welterweight crown in consecutive title shots against Tyron Woodley. In addition, he went down on points to Darren Till last May before the “Showtime” execution.

Kamaru Usman will defend his title against Colby Covington later this year, with the winner of Ben Askren vs. Jorge Masvidal waiting in the wings. There’s also the victor of the Tyron Woodley vs. Robbie Lawler rematch in June.

In short, Thompson has a tall mountain to climb if he plans to reach the welterweight summit.
