Three-point swing? NSAC director calls out UFC 209 judge for wacky scorecard

A lot of folks in the mixed martial arts (MMA) community were left scratching their heads after the scorecards were returned at the conclusion of the UFC 209 pay-per-view (PPV) main event (video), in which Tyron Woodley scored a majority-decision win over Stephen Thompson.

See what all the fuss is about here.

Longtime combat sports judge Sal D’Amato awarded Woodley the ever-elusive 10-8 round for work completed in the fifth and final frame; however, Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) Executive Director Bob Bennett thinks it was “off base.”

From MMA Junkie:

“The one judge that had it 10-8 – we went over it in the debriefing, and that 10-8 was unacceptable. Not that it would have affected the outcome of the fight, but just to share it with you, we certainly strive to do the best we can – we don’t always succeed – and that judge should have scored that round 10-9. You can’t have a three-point swing in 50 seconds.”

Save the three pointers for NBA.

Woodley managed to retain his welterweight crown after 25 minutes of non-action in a bout that was not without its fair share of controversy, at least from a scoring perspective. Unfortunately for “Wonderboy,” he’s already had two shots at “The Chosen One” with no success.

Back to the drawing board.
