There’s a new Mortal Kombat movie coming to theaters (as well as HBO MAX) because everything gets recycled rebooted in Hollywood — for better or for worse — so prepare yourself for an all-new cast on April 16.
One that includes “Cole Young,” played by veteran actor Lewis Tan.
You won’t find Young in any of the video games and let me be the first to take a big steaming dump on the idea of introducing another new character, especially after suffering through the embarrassment of “Art Lean” back in the 1995 flick.

Cole is certainly something fans haven’t seen before. While many gamers can call out the unique fight moves of familiar names, like the daggers of Mileena (played by actress Sisi Stringer), Tan used his own experience to develop a fresh style for Cole. He pulled from UFC fighter Jorge Masvidal for that “salt-of-the-earth grit,” while also tapping into muay Thai (a.k.a. Thai kickboxing), judo, jujitsu, and “MMA roots.”
Masvidal was “honored” by the inclusion.
I played the original Mortal Kombat video game in the restaurant I waited tables at back in summer ‘93 and even ordered the comic books from Midway, so expect me to be one of those insufferable dorks who looks down their judgey nose at everything in the new movie.
Let’s just hope this latest offering, expected to earn an “R” rating with its fatalities, is better than Mortal Kombat: “Annihilation,” which to my disbelief has six writers credited for that abomination, two of which are charged with the screenplay.
