The current buzz in the MMA world is a potential fight between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov, but UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson is determined to stake his claim as the next challenger to McGregor’s throne.

While Nurmagomedov, 29, wants to fight McGregor and Ferguson on the same night, ‘El Cucuy’ wants to make it clear that his focus is on a title unification bout against ‘The Notorious’.

McGregor’s longtime coach and mentor, John Kavanagh, recently posted a tweet mocking the fighters demanding that he defend or vacate his title, and it didn’t take long for Ferguson to reply.

Ferguson, who submitted Kevin Lee to win the interim belt at UFC 216, called McGregor a ‘p*ssy’ and also took at a dig at SBG Ireland head coach Kavanagh.

Although Khabib dazzled fans with his latest win over Edson Barboza, Ferguson is the interim champ and has earned more than enough ammunition to challenge McGregor for the official 155-pound title. A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under renowned coach Eddie Bravo, 33-year-old Ferguson is on a ten-fight win streak and has beaten a who’s who of top lightweight fighters, including former champ Rafael dos Anjos and Barboza.

UFC president Dana White, however, has hinted that Ferguson will square off with Nurmagomedov to determine the next true No. 1 contender. McGregor, 29, wants to be paid his worth and is currently trying to negotiate a new contract with the UFC.
