Talented UFC women’s strawweight contender Tecia Torres will have the biggest opportunity of her career tonight (Sat., July 28, 2018) at UFC ON FOX 30 live on FOX from inside Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, when she takes on former 115-pound champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
Torres, 28, has been fighting some of the best women in the world since making her debut in Invicta FC back in 2012. The former Ultimate Fighter alum holds victories over notable names like Michelle Waterson, Paige VanZant, Felice Herrig, Angela Hill, and Bec Rawlings, but she’s never faced someone quite as polarizing as “Joanna Champion.”
Torres got all the Jedrzejczyk she could handle during UFC on FOX 30’s media day faceoffs earlier this week in Calgary. Luckily, “Tiny Tornado” wasn’t fazed by Jedrzejczyk’s aggressive staredown and verbal trash talk.
“I thought it would be a little bit more than that,” Torres told reporters (h/t MMAjunkie). “It is what it is, but it was fine. She’s not scary at all.”
Jedrzejczyk, who is coming off back-to-back losses to current UFC women’s strawweight champion Rose Namajunas, is known to push the limit when confronting her opponents on stage. She did her best to shake Torres up, but it doesn’t seem like it worked.
“She said, ‘Welcome to hell,’” Torres said. “I told her, ‘I’m not scared.’ Then she said, ‘Just wait until the octagon door closes.’ I said ‘OK, I’m ready.’ And that’s what it was.”
If Torres isn’t scared then maybe she’ll be able to get into the head of Jedrzejczyk when the two tango this weekend on big FOX and push herself into title contention with a massive win.
“On my end, I think it can catapult me to that No. 1 contender spot, as no one else has been able to beat Joanna except for Rose,” Torres said. “But should Joanna become victorious this weekend, I don’t think she’ll be catapulted right back in there.”
Despite her recent struggles inside of the Octagon, Jedrzejczyk remains one of the very best female fighters in mixed martial arts (MMA) today. Her track record speaks for itself and Torres will have to put forth a perfect performance to walk away victorious.
“She’s going to be in for a surprise,” Torres said. “I think there hasn’t been many girls who could match her speed, and I’ll be able to do that.”
