Many fans were under the impression that Mike Tyson’s return to the boxing ring was a one-off, but the former undisputed heavyweight champion might decide to stick around.
Speaking to Jim Gray ahead of his exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr. Tyson, now 54, said he would be open to the idea of a trilogy bout with Evander Holyfield.
“That’s always something that we can do if the people want it, if it’s pragmatic enough, I’d love to do it,” Tyson said, per MMA Fighting.
Holyfield, 58, has beaten Tyson twice. The former world champ beat Tyson via 11th round TKO back in 1996 and earned a disqualification victory in their 1997 rematch after ‘Iron’ Mike bit Holyfield’s ear in the 3rd round.
Tyson is focused soley on Roy Jones Jr. for the time being but the heavyweight legend is also open to fighting top contenders in the future.
“Man, that would be a novelty,” Tyson said. “Me using my skills, matching my skills now against the best heavyweights in the world, that would be mind-boggling.”
“‘Old guys’ – that word don’t even make sense,” he added. “‘Old.’ It’s just a new time, a new thinking period in our lives. This is what we want to do. Sometimes the gods of war, they revive you and say, ‘You have to do more.’ Now I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t prepare for this. I box people to see if I’m able do this stuff, so I can do this stuff.”
Tyson vs. Jones will take place later this month, Nov. 28 at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
