UFC 216 video recap: Demetrious Johnson sets UFC record with spectacular armbar finish

Demetrious Johnson successfully defends his title a total of 11 times with a highlight reel armbar finish over Ray Borg.

In what was supposed to be the headliner for UFC 215, the flyweight title fight between Demetrious Johnson and Ray Borg at UFC 216 did not disappoint. But as expected by many, “Mighty Mouse” was able to pull off the win via a noteworthy armbar finish, setting a UFC record for 11 consecutive title defenses.

What was the high point of the fight?

Despite coming into the fight as a +900 underdog, Borg proved that he was not an easy fight as the odds had dictated. He had some flashes of brilliance with his takedowns, and had good looks in some grappling exchanges, but he was going up against the UFC’s top pound-for-pound fighter.

It was only a matter of time before Johnson was able to find the perfect opening to execute what could be one of the best finishes in recent memory. From a suplex slam, Johnson got hold of Borg’s left arm in mid-air and extended it as he hit the mat. Borg did try to fight it off, but ended up tapping a few seconds later, with less than two minutes left in the fourth round.

Where do these two go from here?

There is nothing to be ashamed of, if you are Ray Borg. At 24 years old, he still has a lot of years ahead of him to further grow as a fighter. He may need to go back to the drawing board and re-assess what’s next, but he is still worthy of a top-five contender for his next opponent.

It is safe to say that Johnson has nothing left to prove at 125-pounds, and personally, I would like to see him take on other challenges at a heavier weight class. To address the elephant in the room, a fight against T.J. Dillashaw should still be made next, no matter what the result of UFC 217’s bantamweight title fight against Cody Garbrandt may be.

Watch it now, later, or never?

Demetrious Johnson’s slam to armbar finish alone makes the card a must-buy. Watch it now, and put it on loop.
