Donald Cerrone will try to ride his newfound momentum in the lightweight division when he takes on streaking contender Tony Ferguson at UFC 238 on June 8 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
This is a huge opportunity for “Cowboy” to leap frog a ton of contenders at 155 pounds. Cerrone reentered the division earlier this year only to finish rising youngster Alexander Hernandez via TKO at UFC on ESPN+ 1 and most recently Al Iaquinta via unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN+ 9. Add in a submission victory over Mike Perry last November and Cerrone has won three decisive fights in a row.
That said, Cerrone will be taking on one of the hottest fighters in MMA today, as Ferguson has won his last 11 fights inside of the Octagon. That streak includes wins over notable fighters such as Anthony Pettis, Edson Barboza, Rafael dos Anjos, and Kevin Lee. “El Cucuy” has also finished eight of those 11 wins by way of knockout, TKO, or submission.
In preparation for Cerrone’s quick turnaround against Ferguson next month at UFC 238, the promotion has opened up its vault and released full fight video footage of “Cowboy’s” bout with welterweight veteran Rick Story back at UFC 202 in 2016 (shown above). After a back-and-forth first round, Cerrone ended up catching Story with a nasty combination on the feet and put him away via TKO in the second. It was Cerrone’s third finish in as many bouts after moving up to 170 pounds earlier that year.
Only time will tell if the 36-year-old Cerrone can work his magic again and snap Ferguson’s storied win streak next month. If he’s able to do so then “Cowboy” may very well lock down his second career UFC title shot and face off against the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Dustin Poirier.
