Conor McGrgeor and Dustin Poirier will square off in a rematch over six years in the making at UFC 257 on Jan. 23 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The winner is expected to fight for the UFC lightweight title next time out.
This is a huge matchup to start 2021 to say the least. Outside of the title implications it holds at 155 pounds, it will also be the first time McGregor is fighting in over a year, the first time he’s fighting at lightweight since 2018, and the second time “Diamond” will have the chance to prove he’s a better fighter than “Notorious.” It’s the most marketable matchup in the division with Khabib Nurmagomedov teetering on retirement and it should deliver across the board.
Leading into UFC 257, the promotion has opened up its vault and released one of McGregor’s most memorable Octagon performances, which can be seen in the above video player. This is not McGregor’s first-round finish over Poirier from back in 2014, but rather his two-round destruction of Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. McGregor absolutely obliterated Alvarez for a beautiful TKO finish to become the first double champ in UFC history. The win also helped score his boxing showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr., which essentially set McGregor up for life.
Only time will tell if McGregor can repeat these results at 155 pounds when he meets Poirier in two weeks. But considering “Notorious” has had one year to prepare for his return you better believe he’s coming for the kill.
