Eddie Mercado and Victor Rodriguez are here to recap the classic UFC 60 card which saw Matt Hughes take on Royce Gracie in the main event.

On May 27, 2006, UFC 60 went down from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The marquee matchup saw a clash of eras when the promotion’s dominant welterweight champ Matt Hughes competed in a non-title match with grappling icon, and UFC 1 winner, Royce Gracie. Hughes was able to impose his will on the old school veteran, taking Gracie’s back and finishing with ground strikes in the first round. The co-main event of the evening witnessed a classic striker vs. grappler match when “The Boogeyman” Dean Lister squared off with Italy’s Alessio Sakara, with Lister scoring a triangle submission in the opening round.

Also on the card, two respected grapplers in Chael Sonnen and Jeremy Horn went heads up, with Horn snagging a slick armbar submission in the second round. Undefeated up and comers Diego Sanchez and Brandon Vera remained perfect in their respective divisions, with Sanchez earning a unanimous decision over John Alessio at welterweight and Vera choking out Assuerio Silva in the first round at heavyweight.
