UFC Fortaleza medical suspensions and injuries: Flying knee sits Beneil Dariush for 60 days

UFC Fight Night 106 injuries and medical suspensions for those athletes competing at the “Belfort vs. Gastelum” mixed martial arts (MMA) event last Saturday night (March 11, 2017) from inside Centro de Formacao Olimpica do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil, were released on Monday by Comissao Atletica Brasileira de MMA (CABMMA).

Leading the list of mandatory timeouts is lightweight standout Beneil Dariush, who incurred a 60-day timeout for getting smashed by Edson Barboza’s flying knee (see it). That’s roughly half the term handed down to Tim Means after his submission loss to Alex Oliveira (video).

Every participating fighter was benched for the minimum 14 days; however, select combatants will need additional time off (via MMA Junkie) for damage sustained during their respective performances.

Vitor Belfort: Suspended 45 days with 30 days no contact.
Gian Villante: Suspended 45 days with 30 days no contact.
Beneil Dariush: Suspended 60 days with 45 days no contact.
Jussier Formiga: Suspended 30 days with 21 days no contact.
Bethe Correia: Suspended 30 days with 21 days no contact.
Marion Renau: Suspended 30 days with 21 days no contact.
Tim Means: Suspended 180 days unless right foot cleared by doctor with X-ray. Otherwise, suspended 30 days with 21 days no contact.
Francisco Trinaldo: Suspended 30 days with 21 days no contact.
Joe Soto: Suspended 30 days with 21 days no contact.
Rani Yahya: Suspended 30 days with 21 days no contact.
Garreth McLellan: Suspended 45 days with 30 days no contact.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases. In addition, not all injuries are recorded during the post-fight examination and often times surface in follow-up tests.
