demian_maiaWith the announcement last month that the UFC would be returning to Brazil in August of 2011 after almost thirteen years, it was only natural that many Brazilian fighters would want to fight on the card. It’s almost certain that with all of the talent from the South American country, UFC matchmakers could easilly stack the card from top-to-bottom with Brazilian talent.

Just look at the UFC’s first trip to Toronto in April. There are currently eight Canadians slotted for the card and another who could be added in a featherweight title fight should he earn a win next weekend. Of course I’m referring to Mark Hominick who, if he defeats George Roop at UFC: Fight for the Troops 2 will earn a featherweight title shot against Jose Aldo at UFC 129.

It’s possible that many Brazilian fighters participation on the card could hinge on a victory at upcoming events. A battle between two UFC middleweight fighters at UFC 126 could determine which one headlines the event, be it either Anderson Silva or Vitor Belfort. The title winner would have plenty of time to recover and prepare to defend the title at the Brazilian show in August.

Speaking recently to Tatame.com, former middleweight contender Demian Maia (14-2), told them that he wants to participate at the event very much.

“I’m waiting… I’d like to fight in Brazil in August, it’s what I want the most, but there’s nothing confirmed. My manager is talking to the guys there.. I can’t say much, I’ve fought MMA few times in Brazil and for me it’d be, like the Americans say, priceless…Everybody wants me to fight, but the division is a little bit messed up, the matchmaking, but I can’t complain. I’ve fought four times last year and the most important thing is not to lose the rhythm. I won’t lack fights. UFC has 260 athletes after its fusion with WEC, so it’ll be crazy to match these fights to fill all cards.”
