UFC middleweight Tor Troeng announces retirement from MMA

Tor Troeng, a Swedish middleweight who competed on The Ultimate Fighter 18 and fought four times inside the UFC, announced his retirement from professional mixed martial arts competition late Wednesday.

“After almost 10 years as a professional MMA fighter, it’s time for me to move on,” Troeng wrote (via Google translate) on Facebook in his native Swedish. “I have decided to put the gloves on the shelf. The joy and motivation needed to perform at the highest level is no longer with me.

“I love MMA. MMA has given me many memorable moments, hard training, meetings with amazing people, and above all a lot of joy. I want to thank everyone who has been with me on my journey in one way or another. From its inception in Umeå to the big international arenas. Thanks coaches, family, friends, Friends, fans, and everyone else who believed in me and been by my side. You know who you are. See you soon.”

Troeng, 31, exits the sport with a professional record of 16-7-1. A veteran since 2005, he was considered to be a dark horse to win The Ultimate Fighter 18 but ultimately fell short, losing to Team Jones semifinalist Josh Samman via first-round KO in the season’s elimination round.

Despite the setback, Troeng went on to win his official Octagon debut, choking out fellow TUF 18 castmate Adam Cella in a little over three minutes at the UFC’s second-ever show inside his native Sweden. But the momentum he gained was short-lived, as Troeng subsequently ended his run riding a career-worst three-fight losing streak after dropping consecutive decisions to Rafael Natal, Trevor Smith, and Krzysztof Jotko, the last of which took place earlier this month in front of his countrymen at UFC Fight Night 53.
